Pink and Purple Butterfly Birthday

Yay!  Little Madelyn, my niece turned one! This weekend we put together the SWEETEST pink and purple, butterfly birthday party!  Happy Birthday Madelyn!

Madelyn with her larger than life lollipop!
The theme for the party was chosen by Madelyn's dad back in July when mom took over the planning of their son's 2nd birthday.  We've been coming up with ideas since then and just this week ended up putting it all together.  Because it was going to be a smaller party, I decided against doing a cake.  But what would a dessert table be without a cake centerpiece?  So I decided to make a cake out of some of the Styrofoam cake dummies I had.  Mom really liked the last butterfly cake I made so that is what inspired this cake.  I also made my first Etsy purchase from Sugar Robot - The little edible wafer paper butterflies were the perfect finishing touch on this pink and purple creation!

We thought it would be fun to put together a SWEET table for a very SWEET little girl.  Even the paper used for the butterfly garland was made with paper embellished with cupcakes, candy, and chocolate!  Making these garlands are so easy with my Silhouette SD!  And I even made my own food tents this time!  I was so excited to find the perfect matching purple and pink ribbons!

On the SWEET table there were banana split cupcakes (a moist banana cupcake topped with strawberry buttercream, chocolate sauce and a cherry), chocolate dipped rice crispy treats, chocolate covered pretzels, classic rock candy, bubble gum, grape licorice, sixlets, lollipops, and water to wash it all down! Party guests were also given little goodie bags to take home the sweets.  Also on the brunch menu were fresh fruit kabobs, quiche, and a mixed greens salad.

A favorite amongst the young guests.
The banana split cupcakes were a perfect addition.

Of course there was pink lemonade!

{Friday Feature} Butterfly Inspiration

I have less than one week left to help plan my niece's first birthday party. My sister asked her husband to pick the theme for the party and he picked butterflies!  We know were' going to do a fun candy table but now I need a great cake to add to the table.  I found a couple today that will serve as some inspiration and thought I would share them here as my Friday Feature!

Fall into Fashion with Stella & Dot Launch Party

This past weekend I hosted my "Fall Into Fashion with Stella & Dot" Launch party!  I've been dying to whip up some yummy, fall inspired treats for a while now and this proved to be the perfect occasion!

On the menu were:
  • Caramel Apple Cupcakes
  • Pumpkin Ginger Whoopie Pies
  • Goat Cheese with Pumpkin Butter and Crackers
  • Chocolate Covered Pretzels (mainly for decoration)
  • Vanilla Meringues (again mainly for decoration)
  • Mulled Apple Cider with Apply Brandy (Too bad it was over 70 degrees and no one wanted a hot drink)
  • Sparkling Apple Cider
I was so excited that I was able to use my Silhouette SD again - I just love this machine and want to REALLY learn how to use it.  But in the meantime, it proved very useful in making my leaf garland!  I bought this huge book of fall inspired paper from Michaels so there was no need to design anything!

Thanks again to Lindi of Love the Day!  She made my food tents and matching signs that were just perfect for the party!

Here are some photos:

{Friday Feature} Swanky Tables

I had the privilege of meeting Annette of Swanky Tables while at a conference in Portland Oregon this past summer.  Swanky Tables is a boutique event design company specializing in chic social events with a modern flair.  For over an hour I was able to pick Annette's brain about her business; how she got started, what her specialties were, etc.  I was really interested in how she put together those fabulous dessert tables and candy bars since I myself like to make fabulous desserts (well cupcakes anyway =).

After our initial meeting in July we've continued to stay in touch through email and phone. She most recently asked me if I could provide some custom fondant cupcake toppers for an upcoming event she had.  She sent me the companies logo and I brainstormed how I was going to make that happen!  Originally we were just going to do a lowercase "b" cut out but then the owner of the company wanted their logo.  What I ended up doing was cutting the logo out of card stock and rolling it into the fondant.  This was a technique I used to make my Elmo face cut outs a few months back. Instead of cutting out the logo (it was rather small) I hand painted each one with gel food color.  I think they turned out nice for the first time ever trying this technique!  Here are some pics she sent me from the event.

{Tasty Thursdays} Pumpkin Whoopie Pies

I was so excited yesterday when I received my mail to find a King Arthur catalog! I've just recently started order some baking supplies from here so now I guess I am on the mailing list! Their best product has to be their cake enhancer. I used 2 teaspoons of this in every cake layer I made a couple weeks ago and I really noticed a difference in the texture of the cake - I highly recommend.

Now back to why I was excited - On the front cover of this catalog were these big, beautiful whoopie pies! They looked so delicious and I just need to find some time in my schedule to make them. I eagerly turned to the page that included the recipe - hoping not to find vegetable shortening in the list of ingredients...There is a bit of veggie oil but not too much (I'm kind of a butter freak).

Here's the recipe if you're interested:

Ingredients

Cake
• 1/2 cup soft butter
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons molasses
• 2 tablespoons King Arthur Cake Enhancer, optional
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 2 teaspoons Vietnamese cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
• 2 large eggs
• 1 1/2 cups (one 15-ounce can) pumpkin
• 2 1/4 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour

Filling
• 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature
• 4 tablespoons soft butter
• 2 cups glazing sugar or confectioners' sugar, sifted
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum, optional
• 1/4 cup diced crystallized ginger, optional

Directions
1) To make the cookies: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease two baking sheets or line with parchment paper.
2) Beat together the butter, oil, sugar, molasses, cake enhancer, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices.
3) Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl, then beat in the eggs one at a time, until fluffy.
4) Stir in the pumpkin.
5) Add the flour in two additions, mixing well after each addition.
6) Use a muffin scoop to deposit the thick batter onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2" around each mound.
7) Bake until the cookies feel firm; a slight indentation will remain when you gently press them in the middle, about 16 to 18 minutes.
8) Remove from the oven, cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then move to a rack to cool completely.
9) To make the filling: Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth and fluffy.
10) Beat in the sugar in two additions.
11) Add the vanilla and xanthan gum. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes, until very fluffy.
12) Stir in the crystallized ginger.
13) To assemble: Sandwich two cookies around 2 tablespoons of filling. For best storage, wrap each pie in plastic wrap.

Yield: 1 dozen 4" whoopie pies.
