Topsy Turvy Class

I was excited to take a Topsy Turvy class being offered at Kake Kraft Korner in Ferndale, MD this past Sunday. It was quite a drive, but for a full day class it was well worth it. Dusty of DoCakes was our instructor and she was great! We had 8 people in the class which was just the right size!

Now that I have learned how to make one of these cakes, I can't wait to try it again. I have definitely learned from my mistakes on the first one. I also would never put such a bad bow on a cake but I was getting inpatient and I didn't let the fondant dry completely.

All in all, I think this cake came out pretty good - I love the colors and the flowers - which were a new purchase.

Madelyn's Baptism Cake

Little Madelyn had her baptism this past weekend on Valentines day. Of course the cake had to be fun and pink! Since I wanted to practice my fondant skills, I convinced my sister to allow me to use it even though she hates the taste.

The cake was a new recipe - I made a white cake which was very light and moist (no egg yolks) with lemon zest. I also made homemade lemon curd which was delicious. The buttercream was flavored lemon as well - This was pretty much a lemon overload cake!

I didn't use my homemade MMF this time - I purchased Satin Ice Vanilla Fondant online at Global Sugar Art - this seems to be the fondant that the cake decorators on television use all the time. I liked working with it and will continue to use it in the future! Also, I found that Global Sugar Art has some pretty good prices on this fondant - compared to the cake decorating supply store I usually go to!

Chai Tea Cupcakes with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting

The 2010 DC Blizzard has us still cooped up in the house. Thankfully we have not lost power or our satellite...which is why I have baking on the mind. Food Network is on 24/7 and since it's the week before Valentines Day, they are featuring lots of sweets!

So...here is another round of cupcakes! This time I did a Chai Tea cupcake and because I had some left over vanilla cream cheese frosting from the last batch, they were topped with that and a touch of cinnamon.

SnOwMG 2010 Cupcakes

In honor of one of the biggest snow storms in Washington DC history, I made these "snow ball" cupcakes! Moist chocolate cupcakes with vanilla cream cheese frosting and sprinkled with sweetened coconut.
